The Silence of Deafness is an Abstract, not an Absolute.
….now, how the hell do I use it??!! this is for sanctum who seems to know his stuff with Blackberrys, or anyone who might help me?
I have just aquired one from someone through work, but I need to get it unblocked so it will accept my ‘pay as you go’ simcard, so I want to know, do I need to be on a bill sim for me to use the net and messenger ect? or will it work with my ‘pay as you go’ sim? also was it built to be hard to use?? I find it so hard to type anything legible before an hour passes!!
I havent paid anything for this, and probably wont in the long run, but if I cant use it theres no point in keeping it!! and it looks sooo cool!!! I could just use it for calls but that would be a waste! any tips????
thanks!

Awesome Lette! That’s a nice Blackberry you got there.
I use the Blackberry 8703e….the 8100 is called the Pearl as its called here in the ‘States.
I don’t use a sim card and it’s not unblocked, meaning it has a lock to Sprint where I bought it from. Using the keyboard on it is not a problem for me but I’ve never used the 8100 but know that you can use one hand to text the messages and emails.
My blackberry has a scroll wheel while your’s has a little joystick/rollerball to navigate around. It takes time to learn the applications on it…you can use Yahoo instant messenger and download it for free..BUT in your case, if you’re deaf which you can ask for a data-only plan for unlimited use instead of voice…….but it’s up to you.
Mine’s data-only without a voice plan…and can still use the phone features even though they cost 20 cents per minute as a surcharge.
Ask the person which carrier the phone was used previously…..in your country, you can take it to any carrier and have the card removed to be unblocked..but in the USA, it’s hard to get around unblocked
.
Keep it…it’ll be one of your most valuable communication hubs until you can buy a new blackberry with the full keyboard. You should also have a web browser built in the phone as well as IP Relay applications. I can use i711 Relay and Sprint IP Relay in my blackberry…it’s great.

:( thats a pity I should have given it a chance, I gave it back, he wanted nothing for it, but he is the type of guy that I dont want to owe him any favours if you know what I mean, I gave it back and I really want it, but I cant use it!! Iv been on a 12hour shift today and I had nothing to do but figure out this phone, and for someone who eats and sleeps gadgets I found it so very hard! the newest one I saw also today and it looks much easier as it has a full keyboard, but they are so expencive and here I found out you have to be on a bill system for messeging to work
weeeeep
in the future maybe but not right now, I would love to have a handset like that, and it looked so friggin cool!

Well..here in the USA, with Sprint’s plan…deaf people can buy the 8703e Blackberry for $99 bucks and get the $29.99 data-only plan…it’s nice. I would suggest looking at other stores and find a good Blackberry that you can afford…but I recommend the full keyboard version and get the unlimited data only plan..and with some voice minutes if you want.
and then…….there’s always E-Bay

IN the USA they don’t use SIM cards like we do, the phone itself tends to be locked or something.
I would think it would be fairly difficult to use a Blackberry on a PAYG tarrif in England (Do you Irish have the same companies, or different ones?) but it is possible.
Personally I’m not a huge fan of PDAs because they are still very expensive and we just don’t have deaf-friendly tarrifs and there’s no IP Relay *GRRR* so we can’t use it for that either.
One of my friends has a Nokia PDA with keyboard plus a PAYG tarrif, but she’s already wrecked the PDA which she spent about GBP400 on just over a year ago!
I’m supposed to be getting a blackberry from work, but at the rate they’re getting my necessary equipment I won’t hold my breath! I only got my FM system 17 weeks after starting in the job!!! It’s good though, really helps in meetings.
