The Silence of Deafness is an Abstract, not an Absolute.
Just when I have been using my Sprint Blackberry to communicate with deaf people here in Vermont, I just got a Sorenson VP (videophone) for VRS (video relaying services) and/or face to face communications to a deaf person.
Deaf/Hoh people get the Sorenson VP-200 for free…the technology is sick (I mean that in a good way). It requires high speed internet access via DSL or cable.
And still enjoying my new apartment situated among the mountains….so…does anyone here have a VP or such?

Nope but I do have a converser, which is amazing, I got it through college, as it costs 450 euro and I was having trouble hearing in my lectures, but its really good, but not the most fashionable of accessories either! The speaker wears the Mike part of the converser around their neck and I wear the reciever around mine, it works through my T loop facility in my aids and I can adjust the volume and tone, it has worked quiet well. and even if the speaker doesnt want to wear it around their neck I can place it on the table and still hear quiet well it has a broad range and im delighted with it

Lette,
I used to have something like that years ago in grade school up til high school. Phonic Ear Company built those huge block-like hearing aids and you had to strap them on your chest and the teachers wear a microphone, so this way, their voices are amplified on the receiving end….especially since it’s an RF device…it’s an amusing eavesdropping tool (wink).
In my last two years in high school, I pretended to use the phonic ear equipment which was required back then. I don’t think they make those ‘old school’ phonic ears from the 1970s-1980s anymore and have been scaled down in size over the years with the loop or ‘boot’ style attachment to the hearing aid.
But my video phone is for home use…it’s amazing.

Lette,
I wish I could find the site that shows the old Phonic Ear equipment but for some reason their official site is gone..I’m still researching.

I think I might even have a picture of me with those huge phonic pak. I hated them cuz you could really run around much without the thing pounding against your chest.

. I use it once in a while but should use it more often…in most cases, it’s work related.
