The Silence of Deafness is an Abstract, not an Absolute.
I mentioned here before about suffering with a condition that feels like im breathing through my ears, and it causes severe pain and discomfort, and it turns out im not alone! A lot of you got back to me saying you had the same and simelar problems, well as of now, im making it my business to find out what causes this. We have all been to doctors and specialists but alass they are none the wiser as to what it is!
Iv just called my specialist for an appointment, and I will hear back from him Monday, Im not going to give up or leave his office when ever I get the appointment, untill we find out what it is, what ist called, and most importantly what can stop it!!
I will continue to do research with regards to this, and ill keep you posted, I have searched the web forever and have found nothing on it, so hopefully we can come to a close on it, between us here
any comments please take part, I think we are the first forum to discuss what this thing is!
the Link to the original discussion is here:http://somewhatsilent.com/2006/06/25/im-breathing-thru-my-ears/

Hi lette what u r describing sounds like u have a build of fluid behind your ear drum. This is usually caused by a blocked Eustachian tube. Sometimes the specialists give naval sprays to help open up the tubes or they may insert grommets to help drain the fluid.
I hope u get sorted soon.
February 5th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
well see herein lies the distinct problem Mela
thank you for the sugestion, but thats not it!! there is no sign of infection in my ears when I get it checked, and I have had grommets inserted 8 times in each ear which was a huge contributing factor to the state of my ears at the moment so my specialist, and I refuse to do that again!! as for the fluid, well I have a tendancy to get build up of fluids allright but if anything when this happens the ‘Air sinsation’ gooes away and my ear just gets sore!! this feeling is so strange and all my doctors, audios and specialists dont seem to have a clue what it is!!! I have spoken to my spealist earlier today and im now just waiting for an appointment, and as i said b4 im not leaving till i get a valid explanation!
February 6th, 2007 at 5:25 am
I hope and pray that someone can figure out whats wrong and fix it.
Hugs Mela

I can only explain the discomfort I feel as the eardrum going in and out as I talk. It does feel like I can hear my own breath through my ear. It doesn’t hurt, but my god it is irritating as hell! I thought that it would be an easily identifiable problem and remedy, I was surprised to find that this was the only site that addressed it. I’m going to talk to my doc about it, too!
March 1st, 2007 at 10:15 am
the only thing is now, every time I do the swallow thing to solve the problem for a few mins, I fall over!! it throws my ballance complely off and that worries me!
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:17 pm
Just a thought.
I’m thinking it could possibly the opposite of a blocked eustachian tube - maybe the tube is for some reason permanently open. It is a rare condition, but from what I’ve read it is possible.
Let us know how you get on!
March 23rd, 2007 at 7:31 pm
wow, i never thought of that! that could be something, but i am accumilating all this info for my appt on the 1st may, ill let you all know how i get on!
March 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 pm
He lette, yep, that could be it… I’m no big authority on that particular condition, but after having read so much on the net over the last few weeks (due to myself having a bit of a nightmare with my own ears / blocked eustachian tubes) I thought I’d chime in to let you know what i’d discovered.
I’m only guessing here, but it would seem to make sense that if your ET doesn’t close properly you are bound to be able to hear yourself breath - and of course hear yourself speak inside your head… I’ve had that similar sensation at times in the past, very freaky sensation! - having it go on for such a long time must be a seriously distressing tho, so you’ve certainly got my sympathy on that one!
Anyway, the actual condition is called “Patulous Eustachian tube” or PET for short. It certainly is a very rare condition, which is probably why only few doctors know about it, anyway, here’s a couple of links that i’ve just found that seem to confirm what I’ve written above…

It’s just how I always describe it to my doctor but he’s an overpaid moron!
Thanks so much

“Hi lette what u r describing sounds like u have a build of fluid behind your ear drum. This is usually caused by a blocked Eustachian tube”
Does this sound like blocked Eustachian tube? My ear hurts if I put something like cotton bud in, feels infected, but no pain if I leave alone, sometimes, well quite often it gets blocked especially if I do the air preasure thing to stop my ears popping when diving or in plane, also when I swallow it seems like air goes out through my ear!? Same if I hold my nose and blow gently I can hear what seems like air going out through my ear then when I inhale it seems like it going back in? Weird? Basically if I burp it feels like the air rushes out through ear too, is annoying as heck!
May 4th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I just started having this sensation too. My right ear doesn’t hurt all the time, but if I burp, I can feel air pushing out through this ear and it pops and hurts. I don’t have fluid draining from my ear or an excessive build up of wax or anything. If I put my finger in my ear and lightly push, it is a little sore. I wish I knew if it will go away on it’s own. I’ve only had it for a week or so, but it’s getting annoying.
May 4th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
Just to add…I don’t hear a heartbeat in my ear or my own voice, and I appear to be hearing voices, music etc. just fine. So I don’t know what the heck is going on.
May 4th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
get it seen to to me that sounds like an ear infection, which can be nasty!
May 4th, 2007 at 5:31 pm
well thats what happens me when i get an infection, the exact same thing when burping, swallowing pushing my finger in etc. what they will do is usually give you drops or tabs and it will heal right up, if you have never had it before it can be a bit scary but i dont think its serious, but im no doc!!
May 11th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
and all the while i thought it is happening to me only. the breathing do get heavy at times and causes some discomfort specially at night time.
i tried the year old remedy of warm olive oil (the one which you get at the pharmacy) it worked for few days but i am back to it again. really annoying….
May 13th, 2007 at 8:15 am
hi bobby, well im having an op on the 31st of this month to try and get rid of the problem ill let ye know if it works!
May 17th, 2007 at 1:19 am
I just have to say thank you so much for posting all of this information.
I’ve been suffering from this for a long time and it’s so nice to finally have a name for it!
Thank you!
May 22nd, 2007 at 9:36 pm
I have had the same problem, it occured with my allergies and exposure to chemicals I am sensitive to. I have gone on claritin and I changed jobs so I’m not around the chemicals/fumes and it has gone away.
May 30th, 2007 at 8:22 am
Maybe somebody can help me? About 8 days ago I started experiencing A crackling noise in my left ear. I thought nothing of it for the first few days as I may have gotten water in it. But then the noise began to be more persistent and at times get louder and then stop for a few seconds and come right back again. I went to the hospital and they said my left ear looked swollen inside and gave my some ear drops and motrin 600 for the pain. I started on this regime for the last 3 days but now the crackling is always there 24 hours a day and evertime I make a head movement the noise will get louder and louder and all of a sudden stop, but followed by a brief sound of air going in my eardrum and I become vertigo and the crackling comes right back. can anyone help me?
May 30th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Adam iv experienced this before also, though im no ENT specialist but for me it was everytime I had a build up of fluid behind my eardrums, brought on by infection, and unfortunately for me also it got worse before it got better!!
Fluid causes the ear drum to swell outwards, and usually can come with some noise and or pain, the noise can range from sounding like wind or under water or crackling too, Iv definatly had the crackling sound.
Crackling can also be caused by loose ear wax rolling around in the middle ear, it will eventually settle, but it is tiresome when its there!!
If it persists I would recommend asking to be reffered to an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat specialist)
as doctors have a tendancy to just hand out drugs and not investigate it any further untill it may be too late!
so finish the course of treatment your on and if its still there, hunt down a specialist just to be sure
June 1st, 2007 at 3:27 pm
I’ve just been to the ENT doctor because i have exactly the same symptoms - had them for about 10 years . Anyway the doc seems to think it could come from tension around the upper spine and neck - this can cause tightening and build up around the sinuses. I must say sometimes if i am in a rush or anxious the symptoms are worse. Acupuncture should help.
June 2nd, 2007 at 6:40 am
well iv had an operation the day before last for this problem, when im better and able ill let you know how it went…..
June 4th, 2007 at 7:07 pm
Hello,
I have been searching the web for what will be 1 year in July for answers.
My problem is two fold. My nasal passages are dry and actually close up on me
but there is nothing in them to be clogging them. Also, my right ear ONLY WHEN
I’M EATING, crackles, but withing 5 minutes, after a meal it stops. Also, the
most annoying thing is that my ears constantly feel pressure, the kind that
swallowing should clear up but it dosen’t. I can aslo forget about going in a plane or upto the mountains, the change in altitudes just screws with my ears too much.I have found that I have to sleep on an incline or else I will wake up with that full/pressure in my ears and it som
sometimes will go away quickly, or not for days. My ENT since I am not the
“cookie cutter case” says that I must just have very sensitive ears!!!!!!! I
am in the process of trying to find and ENT who is at least curious! Thanks for
any info anyone can offer up!

i have almost the same problem too. during the night i feel like someone is breathing just close to my left ear. sometimes i feel or hear the breating getting heavy. what could it be. what kind of an ear problem is that? are there other people with the same problem. i can only hear it when i am sleeping. from just one ear and sometimes if i rub it, it stops sometimes it gets worse but i dont feel any pain. Help me please dear people.
June 5th, 2007 at 10:11 am
I also have the same issue Lette has where it causes me to get vertigo. It’s horrible and I’ve been to a couple different doctors and ENT specialist, all thinking that it’s allergies. I’ve dealt with this for over 3 years now and if Lette’s procedure works, I would love to hear about it!!! Please keep this forum updated!!!!!
June 6th, 2007 at 9:29 am
…well its been a week now since the op, and my ears are still healing, so I dont know yet how everything is going, but so far, I still have the sensation, but its not as bad, bevause the tubes in my eardrums are preventing the drums from moving in and out!!, so although i still hear and feel the air moving through my ears at the moment, there is no pain and the drums dont flap in and out like they used to, so ill keep you updated as the healing goes on
June 9th, 2007 at 7:50 am
Lette:
Glad to hear you don’t seem to have had too many ill effects from your surgery. I hope it settles down more as you heal more and the pain and unpleasant sensations decrease more and stay gone.
June 19th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Hi Lette,
Just out of interest, did the specialist give a name for the condition he is hoping to have fixed?
What did he say about the Patulous Estachian Tube possibility..? - or was I well off the mark?
Here’s hoping your getting better whaterver it was tho!
G
June 21st, 2007 at 8:21 am
Hi again G72, well the name he is giving for my condidion is Estachian Tube Dysfunction : Links include: http://www.doctorhoffman.com/etd.htm
http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/symptoms/etdysfunction.htm
http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/27001164/
http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/Archives/Archive-000002/HTML/20030415-72-000338.html
The thing is with me, I have a combination of this and Rhinitis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinitis
and also under developed Estachian tubes which all contribute to the symptoms and problems! so there is no one term to cover what this sensation is!! within all the people here including myself, all have similar symptoms but they do differ in some cases!
I recently had an operation which has helped aliviate the majority of the problems read all about it here:
http://somewhatsilent.com/2007/06/14/im-back/
:) Im still recovering, but doing well, there are tiny twinges of pain but very rarely and very tollerable, and they will go away eventually
It helped ease the symptoms and helped my hearing significantly for the 1st 2 weeks, my hearing is camming back down to my usual levels now, this op, is not to help hearing difficulties as such, but it can help if you have fluid build up which caused hearing loss also, once they drain the fluid, natrually your hearing improves, the T Tubes they insert help airate and ballance the middle ear, and has helpped get rid of this sensation for me so far
im very happy
July 23rd, 2007 at 9:32 am
I cannot believe others are having this…I am 45 and have had this since I was 8. I want to jump!!! I can’t take it..I can constantly hear myself talk through my ears which makes me dizzy after hours. I have been to speacialist after specialist and NO ONE can help me. I cry because I said to my doctor once a month is bareable, I am now getting this EVERY day!!!! ALL DAY! I can’t take it! They gave me nose spray, didnt work, musinex, didnt work, then they said, sorry nothing we can do..This is aweful! Lette, please give me the name of your doctor, I will fly to see him/her so they can help me…thanks!
July 25th, 2007 at 11:40 am
Dee welcome to the group!! i think of it like a support group now!! But Iv done very well on the treatment, my Specialist gave me, His Name is: Professor John Fenton, and I have to say he has been brilliant, I had a recent check up since the operation and he said my ears were bone dry, My ear drums accepted the T Tubes and it was as perfect a recovery they could have possibly hoped for! So Im happy and I have to be honest, I havent really had the sensation at all since getting the tubes!! Brilliant, so I dont have to see him till january next year again!! all is well, I still wear my hearing aids and everything seems normal again
Professor is in the Midwest Regional Hospital in Limerick City in the southwest, if your really thinking of seing him, send me an email! letteapplejuice@yahoo.ie
July 26th, 2007 at 11:23 am
Thanks Lette!
I found another doctor….I thnk he found something that works for me…I am hoping this is it! Its a compound nose spray…so a regular pharmacy can’t do it you have to go to a compound pharmacy. I used it yesterday and it worked!!!!!!! ( so far)!!!!!! If anyone is interested let me know…

ive had this problem forever and it’s unbelievable to finally hear other people talking about it. ive been living w/ the “breathing through the ears” for as long as i can remember and it just returned full-time. i was riding in a car, heard some crackling in my left ear which is nothing major, and now i cant stop “breathing through my ear”. i used to be able to get it to stop by plugging my nose and then trying to inhale through it but now that doesnt even work. it’s so annoying! i hate having bad ears
August 19th, 2007 at 6:58 am
Hi - I’ve had Patulous Eustachian tubes for a few years now. My right ear is constant and when I talk I hear my own voice reverberating in my head. When I lay down it feels like I’m breathing through my ears. The only relieve I get is by putting pressure on my neck where the eustachian tubes are so in effect I am physically closing them with my hands. I have seen a ENT specialist and he has offered an op whereby he would inject around the tubes to close them. The downside is that this may close them leaving me with blocked tubes!! Dee what is the compound spray that you used?
August 21st, 2007 at 3:53 am
Hi all. Ive read your comments and am very comforted to know Im not the only one with this condition. Ive been searching the net furiously trying to understand what this is but with no luck - it sort of sounds like fluid in the ear or ear infection symptoms but this air going in and out thing doesnt match the symptoms of those. I too have the awful feeling of breathing thru my ears when they “pop open” after trying to equalise in pressure which never really succeeds. This occurs especially when I get a little stressed or anxious. Unfotunately this is usually at work (Im in an office job) which means trying to communicate with people while this is happening is very disconcerting, I feel like I cant talk properly and must pull some weird faces as Im trying to get the words out - most frustrating ! Fortunately for me it only happens at times like this, when Im relaxed them Im OK. My ears get sore after a full day at work with them popping open and closed all the time. I try to relive the symptoms by breathing thru my mouth which closes my ear passage up again eventually. I havent consulted a specialist yet as the general GP told me it would go away 6 months ago but hasnt ! I also think this might have to do with poor air intake as I have thin nasal passages which restrict my breathing unless I breath thru my mouth. Thanks again guys, your feedback has helped, I do hope we can narrow this thing down to a name at least.
September 3rd, 2007 at 8:19 am
Hi. Dee, I want to know what your spray is!! I have been experiencing this “breathing through the ear” sensation increasingly in one ear, the left. I play the violin, and I believe my new violin is causing this. It is very loud, and I’ve been sick about my hearing in my ear changing in this way since playing it! I knew I should have been more careful and protective of my ear when I bought it!! Now I am suffering from my choice. I am also getting a lot of that “clicking” in both ears, especially my left, from swallowing. Every time I breathe in through my noise it pops in my left ear and clicks in both. It is unbearable!! The doctor prescribed specialized earplugs that cost over $100 each to make (for when I play). I play in the Temple Square Orchestra that accompanies the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! The doctor told me I have some inner ear hearing loss (just slight) where I cannot hear higher frequency pitches as well as I used to. I feel sick b/c I love hearing this music when I play! And, it frustrates me b/c the doctor said I needed to take an antihystemine (sp?) to calm the eustacian tube down, but I don’t believe that is the problem. Who do you go to get your ears cleaned out? (What kind of doctors does that, is what I want to know)? I had that done as a child and it seemed to help the constant clicking. Why don’t they have “lasik” for ears yet?!!
September 3rd, 2007 at 8:22 am
Oh, and I have no pain involved ~ just pressure build up (that is soo annoying as others have described) when I breathe through my nose!
September 7th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Hi All;
Okay this stuff has helped me and I have been having this problem since I was a kid…I would hear myself breathe for 27 out of 30. Now its down to maybe 3 days in the month..I’ll take it!It’s called Biestrogen 80/20 nasal spray. You must get it at a compound pharmacy. his stuff is no joke! Like I said it doesnt take it totally away, but it really has helped alot! I’ll be checkng back hope this help everyone!!!!

September 7th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Hi again,
This nose spray mentioned above is for the hearing yourself breathing through your ears. What it really is, is, Patulous of the Eustachian tubes. Which means your estachian tubes do not have the ability to close (so I am told)…I am not sure about the other things mentioned on this site, but mine would get worse if it was really hot out and I was sweating. It would start in one ear and when it got worse during the day it would go into the other ear. As the day went on it made me dizzy, and I wouldnt want to talk because I couldn’t take hearing the vibration in my own head. Then again it would happen on a beautiful day too. I really truly hope this works for others as much as it has helped me!!!!
September 10th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Hi there Ihave had two unsuccessful grommet operations. Both within six months. Now constant feeling of fullness in my ear and a lot of pain. Awaiting appointment with EnT specialist . Iwonder now what the next step will be
September 11th, 2007 at 5:16 pm
It good to find a site that finally addresses this. My problem only occurs after intense training like running. After that training I can hear myself breath like Im breathing through my ear. Also my teeth and gums begin to develop a constant pain. This usually lasts for about an hour or so after the run. Does anyone else only experience this after exercise? I have searched all over for something relating to this and this is the closest I have come.
September 12th, 2007 at 8:40 am
Tj howdy, Im a fitness instructor, and i whitness the breathing through my ears after excersize also, as well as when ever it wants to crop up! but since my operation in April I feel tons better
As for the pain in ur gums and teeth?? iv never heard of that, unless you have sencitive nerves or something I have no idea, but ill keep an eye out for any information and if i see anything ill put it up here for you
September 17th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
I experience the same “ear breathing” phenomenon you all seem to describe. It first started when I was at a horse show, then on my wedding day, then recently after riding (I am an avid horseperson) and then today it started again. (I just did a strenuous horse ride yesterday). I also started to get really carsick whenever my husband would drive, and he is not a bad driver. I was starting to think that it is related to stress, either physical or mental (wedding). But I am also thinking about acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor that can grow on the auditory nerve. My mother had it and had radiation therapy, which cured it, but she has suffered from vertigo her whole life. I am going to consult her and an MD asap for this cause if left untreated it can cause permanent hearing loss. I recommend you all to consider that this may be the same problem. All it requires for a diagnosis is a head CT or MRI. Good luck, and I will keep you posted.
September 19th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
I thought i was the only one with this problem. My ears constantly crackle and pop 24-7 with no pain, but it is very aggrivating i have been experiencing these problems for about a year, every time i swallow and open my mouth or even when i dont they still pop it feels like i live in an airplane…lol i have not been to an ENT yet but i have an appointment with my doctor on oct. 2. Has anybody had the exact same symptoms? and do you know what it could possibly be? any help would be great.
thanks Brandon
September 20th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
Seriously if anyone has any kind of cure or way to make this stop even for a short period of time please let me know it is soooooo annoying
September 20th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
I ear-breathe when it’s cold/humid out, or when I’m exercising during colder weather. I hear my breath like it’s in my ears, my ears feel full and cold and wet, and it feels like each breath stabs my eardrums. I also feel like my lungs are on fire. And like there’s bubbles in my ears.
I found that simply warming up my breath a bit helps a little bit.
But ugh! annoying!
September 21st, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Hi has anyone ever experienced a constant ring and then somtimes hissing like locusts depending on how you moved your head . I have been to ENTs about 4 and they all here me say ring and automatically call it tinnitus (NO CURE) but i belive they are wrong because i have had a ring in my ears for about 7 years now and it has never bothered me but it was there, this noise generates from the ear drum and gets real bad if i dont wear an ear plug cause the noises will reverbarate off my left ear only causing more noise just like a tire losing air and then i will sometimes hear the crackiling noise from my eustachian tube finally when im relaxed i can somtimes get the noise to go away and that is when i will here the normal tinnitus ringing that does not bother.
if anyone can help or guide please it is very debilatating
September 21st, 2007 at 7:22 pm
also to add when the hiss starts clinching down on yhat side of my teeth makes the sound more intense ??????
September 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 am
Adam, I was going to say Tinnitus, untill you went further and explained more about ur simptoms, the ringing could possibly be something simple, like trapped fluid behind the eardrum, or another for ringing is when your ear lose frequencies it will ring a continuous note and then die off, that means that particular frequency note that you heard ring in your ear has died… but that is very VERY rare!
as for the hissing, the breathing thru my ears does this to me too, there was no particular diagnoses my specialist gave me, he just said estuashian tube dysfunction, but I have to say the operation I had in april has helped to no end, I got T-Tubes installed in my eardrums, it was a simple day procedure, ur called in in the morning, the operation is done within about a half hour and then you can go home once the effects from the anistethic has wore off, and I swear the breathing thru my ears is 95% gone!! It comes back only on rare occasions, and its not quarter as bad as it used to be
October 13th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I really thought I was the only one with this problem! My boyfriend thinks I’m nuts… so does my mom. I’m 22 years old and I’ve had this problem on and off for as long as I can remember… Today is the first day in a week that I didn’t breathe through my ears. It’s been driving me nuts because that’s the longest I’ve ever gone with it, it’s usually here and there, not constant. I’m happy to hear I’m not crazy!
October 16th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
I’m relieved to know I’m not alone. My family probably thought I was crazy too, like it’s impossible to breathe through your ears. It doesn’t happen to me often, but started happening more now that I’m pregnant. It’s interesting other people mentioned anxiety because it would happen especially while standing a long time talking to salespeople. Now if only I could figure out what my nose problem is. Sometimes my nose freaks out like my postnasal area gets too dry or gets a tickle and I can’t stop coughing. It almost seems related to the ear thing. Luckily the last time I breathed through my ears, I went home and took a nap and when I woke up my ears were back to normal. But it’s horrible trying to talk to someone when you hear yourself talk and breathe through your ears.
October 21st, 2007 at 5:32 am
I have a similar problem to nya’s. I hear in my left ear what sounds like breathing…but it seems to correspond with my heart rate. It’s not painful…just very annoying.
October 21st, 2007 at 5:38 am
I can’t sleep…it’s ruining my life. It’s not my breathing…I kind of feel like my ear is haunted….I’m pissed. Does anyone have this problem?
October 21st, 2007 at 8:12 am
yup, welcome to our ’support group’ each of us here seem to have a mix of all these symptoms! trust me im trying to find out! I had an appointment on the 31st of this month, now they have changed it to the 5th of december and i have to wait till then to show him a copy of all these comments! I hope he takes the time to read through these and perhaps he could come on here and comment, ill ask him and please god soon we will have an answer for what this is!
Im no professional but I dont believe ‘Estachian tube dysfunction’ can have this many varied symptoms, there must be a name for this!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:46 am
As so many of you said, “I’M NOT ALONE!?!”
I irregularly hear myself breathing out of my ear. It’s not painful, but *very* annoying. When this happens, it usually only lasts for a day. Often around the same periods of time, I will find myself waking up with IMMENSE ear pain - it is aways the ear against my pillow, whichever ear that may be (if I roll over then the other ear starts up!!). My ear(s), when in that type of pain, are always… well, somewhat moist, and extremely painful to the touch, especially around the ear canal. And I know it’s not just my pillow, because I have changed pillow types many times over the last few years. And I am very careful in the shower to keep water out of my ears, but I guess some still gets in (because why else would my ear be moist??). The pain usually lasts for an hour before fading away.
Also something that might be related but I never thought of until reading all of these posts is the fact that I am very off balance, and have been for years. I’ll be standing perfectly still, and will almost topple over anyways!

Bianca, it sounds to me that you almost definatly have fluid in your ear, this would cause pressure behind you ear drum and would cause pain, also this fluid would make its way out of your ear as you sleep and relax, making your ear moist, so I would definatly put it down to that, now like I said im no professional, but I would sugest going to your local doctor and getting him to check out your ears, if there is fluid in there he will see it by looking in, and will probably see that your ear drums will be bulging slightly from the fluid behind them.
its nothing to worry about if its just a common infection causing fluid build up, it can be treated with meds
but dont leave it go, any fluid coming out with pain, is always worth going to a doctor for and he may refer you to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) pro to check you out

Thanks, Lette. I’ve stopped going to the doctor because it happens too often; lately I’ve been just dealing with it. As a child I had tubes in my ears, and a few years back my eardrums both exploded from too much pressure. I was told they healed properly though, which is good. Anyways, maybe I should be more persistent and start going back to the doc.

Emily, You are not alone I am 45 and I have had the breathing through my ears since I was a kid. My ENT gave me a compounded nose spray ( see earlier notes) and I have gone from having it 28 days in the month to maybe 2 days in the month. HUGE Improvement!
October 26th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Lette:
MY ENT said this is a condition that is “rare” but he also said SO MANY people have it..this nose spray has helped me tremendously! Once you spray it in your nose you tilt your head to the side and try and get it in your ear canal…within minutes the breathing through your ear stops..it must close the Estachian tube somehow.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:19 am
I thought i was the only one who can breath through my ears, but it doesnt feel uncomfortable or nothing, just normal. Its just liek breathing like breathing out of my nose. It especially helps me when my ear pops.
October 28th, 2007 at 8:44 am
Dee it sounds good, the only reason im reluctant is, Iv used nasal sprays before for stuff and they mostly made it worse!! My appointment is now the 13th of November!! and im not leaving untill something is uncovered, I did have the operation in April and now my left ear is tearing itchy and feels wet!! its horrible!
Vivian, cool!! it would be great if mine didnt hurt me but it does
but if its not hurting you thats fantastic

Hello. 3 days ago i woke up and got out of bed and i noticed that every time I heard certain sounds my righ ear would get the feeling and sound of prassure in it. well I took some medicine that day and night and went to bed the next morning my ear felt better so I went on with my day. yesterday it felt fine until I took me a nap latter in the day, when I awoke from the nap my ear was feeling as bad as it did the day befoe. I don’t know if its fluid build up or not, but zzIve tried many things even flushing it out for wax, but it did not help. I don’t know what this is but it making me scared to death. there is no pain all there is a feeling of fullness and vibrating preasuue sound it usally feels better or somtimes even worse after I sleep right now it feels the wored its been in a while. I can not here my breathing louder in it , but I can here my voice a little bit in it. I have had bad allergy trouble for a while now. Can anyone tell me anything please this making me have bad anexiety.
December 9th, 2007 at 10:12 am
dont be anxcious, as far as I can tell its just fluid build up from a simple ear infection, I dont think there is anything to worry about but you will need to see a doctor to prescribe you with either drops or anti hestimine or other meds to relieve it, if you have never had ear problems in the past, then its more than likely a simple ear infection with fluid build up
so stop freakin out, and just go see a doc and i bet you will be alright.
now again let me stress, im not a doctor of any sort, i only speak from 24 years of experience with ear trouble, so go see your doc, it just sounds like a simple infection to me, and please let us know how you get on
December 10th, 2007 at 3:51 am
Hi
Just come across this webpage and was wondering if anyone could help. I have been having intermittent pain in my right ear for months. The strange this it only hurts when I breath in. It similar to the pain you get in the back of your nose when you are starting to get the cold but this is deep in my ear. I now have it all the time when I breath in and its starting to really irritate and worry me. I cant find anything on ear pain when breathing on the web and am worried about throat cancer since everything I find is about that. Please help.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
no…. its not throat cancer! well it certainly doesnt sound anything like the symptoms of throat cancer, to me it sounds like middle ear infection, could be a build up of fluid too, can easily be solved by getting drops and a good look at by the doctor, definatly see a doc anyhoo but id say its a middle ear infection, which gives a sharp pain deep inside your ear like someone pricked you with a pin, but drops can heal it and dont leave it go!!!! go see the doc
and good luck
December 16th, 2007 at 6:23 am
Hi Lette! I understand how the Nasal sprays made it worse, mine did too. Nasinex, Flonase ( these types)made it worse. My new ENT said they would make it worse because they shouldn’t be used for what we have. The new spray I use is very different, it’s a compound spray, you can’t get it at the regular pharmacy. I also use
I went from having the “breathing in my ears” 28 days out of 30 to having it maybe 1 day in 30. Not too bad. Once it starts I put the drops in and make sure they get into the back of my ear canal and in minutes it stops. It’s amazing!!!!!! I really wanted to share this with anyone who has this problem. I have had this since I was a kid and finally getting relief without surgery!:)
December 16th, 2007 at 6:39 am
ok, not sure what happen to my post, but I just re read what I wrote and part of it is missing..:) I also use these nose drops called “Ponaris nasal emollient”. So- for the 1 or 2 days I get the breathing in my ears I put these drops in and make sure it gets to the ear canal via my nose. You can feel it get to the rear of your ear canal once you tip your head to the side. Feels kinda weird, but within minutes of getting these drops in my canal it takes the “breathing through your ear” away! I am now able to not use the compound nasal spray as much(very expensive) and use the nasal drops(its almost like an oil and costs about $11.00 per bottle). I now can go months with no symptoms. That has never happened..Again, please note this is ONLY for the breathing feeling through your ear, this is not for pain in ears, or ringing, or ear infections.
December 16th, 2007 at 6:41 am
Lette- I am sorry you aren’t feeling well again…what did the Doc say?
December 16th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
I didn’t have the preassure feeling on the day I went to the doctor so all he said was that I had a wax build up so he flushed my ear. Today when I woke up the preassure feeling was back. What I mean by preassure is my ear feels like I come off a mountain. This feeling comes and goes when it pleases so I don’t know if it could be an eustachian tube disorder or somthing different there has been off and on pain, but oh well. I hope that everyone who is having trouble gets better! God Bless!!!!!!!!
December 20th, 2007 at 9:22 am
ill answer B2k first, then Dee
but im seeing my specialist nearly everyother week at this stage and were doing everything we can to find the cause!
stick with us, ill do my best to get a name at least!
B2k, welcome to the club dear, this is really what its like, it comes and goes and the symptoms very slightly from person to person, and it really does deside when to affect you when it likes, its horrible, and it gets in the waay of everyday life!
The title they have for me so far is estachian tube dysfunction, so other than that I dunno!
Dee, yeah personally I dont find the drops or sprays much good myself, but id be willing to try that, and since the operation I have to say the sensation of breathing in my ears, hasnt been half as bad, all thats at me now is noises and itching!
I went to the specialist 3 weeks in a row there over the past month, and he has me on a course of drops now, apparantly my left ear has an infection arount the T-Tube on my left eardrum and that is causing the discomfort, The drops immediatly stoped the noising in my ears that was actually stopping me sleeping! so im delighted thats gone, but the itching is still there! but i have to take it for 10 days, im about half way through now and I have to see him on the 9th of Jan and he will look again! so we will see! he said if the problem is still there that he will remove the tube which he doesnt want to do but ill wait to see how it goes!

Hello my name is Joe and for the last 6 days i’ve had the breathing through my ear symptom..it’s really frustrating me…Dee i read about the drops you took and i just ordered them..I hope they will help me..
Has anyone else found something that helps them take away the breathing in the ear ?
January 8th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Well this is the only thing that i find similar to what i can do except most of you guys say its painful but when i do it its voluntary. I can do it myself and i can hear my self breathe really loudly. when i do it i hear like this little click or static noise and then i can hear myself. when i do it if i suck in my breath and let go of it while holding my breath its like my ears are plugged. i might sound kind of weird but its kinda like i am breathing through my ears also and i can kinda unplug my ears like that. kinda weird but if you can help me out much appreciated!
January 11th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
I have had this for many years, it doesn’t hurt at all. I thought I had control of my ears from
the inside unlike everybody else and thought it was a gift. I sometimes hear crackling noise
and hear myself breath. I never knoew I was breathing throught my ears until I watch a tv show,
can’t remember which one, but the person said something about breathing throught the ears. It
could of been monk or law and order I was watching. So I made a search and got here. I never
thought about it could be me breathing through my ear after the show said it could. Then I
tested it again and hear myself breath.
I sometimes hear a noise in my hear for a few seconds and it sound like a “beeping” sound for
like 10-15 seconds. I can also make myself do this other noise that sounds like when you driving
a car 50 mph or more and you have the windows open. You hear the air, well I can make myself hear
something like this. When I sneeze I feel that my ears have water or like I put my hands to
cover my ears to hear low or like it. I can fix it by breathing from the ears.
The breathing through the ears has helped me fix a lot of hearing problems.
January 14th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Hi. Well i have suffered from flu and cold for nearly 4 weeks and just starting to recover, however. i woke up one day and i could barely hear out my right ear. it was like the sound around me was dull. so i went to the Dr. and he gave me sudofec and menthol crystal and told me blowing my nose like ear popping would help. he said my Eustachian tube was blocked. However i dont know whats happened, i have recoevered from my cold, and now my right ear is soo irritant. its now like when i talk its seems to muffle on my eardrum, and it seems to loud when i speak and virates on my ear drum. when i pop my ears it doesnt make it better and my ear drum seems to feel really slack. although i can hear. its like what you guys say it doensnt hurt its just annoying. i dont know if its an infection or if my eustachain tube is blocked or what? this had been goin on for like a week now and i dont know what to do?
January 14th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
what you described ric is exactly what i can do except that last part you wrote about car well maybe but yeah if you do it and suck in your breath and let go you plug your ears
January 16th, 2008 at 9:04 am
Ok ill start with, Tito, it sounds to me like you have a fluid build up inside your ear, behind the eardrum, its common after a cold, and can easily be remidied with decongestants, after a few weeks it should clear, if not it may need to be drained, you should go see a doctor if there is no difference after 3 weeks! other than that, its annoying but should clear on its own or with decongestants.
Ric, this has helped you clear hearing problems?? wow lucky you, for mine has made my hearing problems worsen!!
Joe I sent you a mail!!
thanks to everyone who replies here, its great to know were not alone!
January 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Hi again, i have recovered from whats left of my cold, and the ear is still being a pain, it cant possibly have anything to do with the ear drum can it? its because sometimes when i pop my ears. my ear drums rustles and when i swollow it rustles and pops abit too? soo…is it fluid behind my ear drum? someone told me if could just be the weather too. because i really couldnt hear out my right ear today and then i done some training and warmed up and my ear pop i could hear again. however its still has the same feeling as thought im voice seems to lous for my ear as though im “breathing through my ears’ i know it seems complicated but no where else gets what im saying lol. thanks again.
January 23rd, 2008 at 11:48 am
Tito, to me it really sounds like fluid behind the ear drum, which as I said above can easily be resolved, but youll never honestly know unless you get a doctor to take a look in there
January 24th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Ok thanks. i guess i will take your advice and give it another week, if no change, then i will see a doctor. if that doesnt work then an ear specialist. lol thanks alot take care
January 27th, 2008 at 10:04 am
No probs, good luck and let us know how you get on
January 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Hi Joe P-
Hope the drops helped. You have to lean your head back and to the side and make sure you can feel them hit the back of your ear. It’s a weird feeling. It has now been 6 months and I have only had this “breathing” a couple of times! Before the drops and spray was getting this 25-27 days a month since I was a kid.
Lette- How do I get an email sent to me when there is a posting? I like this site and would love to help people!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:14 am
Dee, That I dont know, as im not an admin only a writer, so I just check in every now and then to see if there are any updates
the admin just had a baby and is quiet busy
February 1st, 2008 at 7:37 am
Alright every 1.
Am 16 and ive just come in from running and my ears are really sore…Its as if its inside right behind my ears, annoying and pretty sore!Jst wondering if its the same thing u have got.
P.S Its pretty cold outside and my ears were not covered could tht have anything to do with it???
Any help would be well appricated!!!
February 3rd, 2008 at 10:22 am
yup, the cold is all it is, your ears have only a tiny layer of skin, and the veins are pretty much exposed, if your running out in the cold when you come in and relax your ears will sting a bit, if it keeps up you may have gotten a cold in your ears but if your fine later or by tomorrow, theres nothing to worry about id say, but always go see a doctor if ur unsure
February 7th, 2008 at 12:03 am
hey dee i just ordered some of that ponaris nasal emollent and i was wonderin if i need to get the compound spray with it or can i just use the drops
February 8th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
That sounds really funny, but I was trying to study and my mom was talking with her friends over the phone.. So I decide to plug my ears using the ear plug.. then I felt a sort of discomfort in my lungs.. I asked my mom the same question brought me here.. DO PEOPLE BREATH THROUGH THERE EARS?? she looked at me as if I’m retarded or something. Well, I’s good to know that there are other people have the same symptoms which gives you a sort of relief that you’re not experiencing a serious condition.
About the drop mentioned up there. From where can I get it? Is it helpful? Do anyone can use it or you should consult a specialist before using it?
February 9th, 2008 at 11:08 am
yes dan, consult a doctor or specialist before you use anything incase you have a reaction to it, also what you described doesnt sound what were talking about here!! we physically feel our eardrums move in and out with discomfort and sometimes pain, and involvs hearing trouble, it does not affect our lungs at all, and its not actually breathing through our ears, just the sensation of!
February 13th, 2008 at 12:01 am
I guess I misunderstood your condition.. heheee
However, thanks for your advise.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
hey lette i was just wondering are u still on the compound spray and if so does it help u to have a normal life or does it give u an hour of relief and then u have to take it again. ( talking about the breathing thru ears or hearing your own voice symptoms )
February 14th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Hi Rell- I was the one using the compound spray along with the nose drops-(Ponaris nasal emollient”)I do not think Lette uses them. I can tell you I was using the compound sray and now just am using the nose drops. The drops are more an oil. I have had this problem for 35 years. I cannot believe how much these drops and spray have helped. I went from hearing myslef through my ears 28 days in a month to maybe 2 days a month, and the 2 days are half days because I put the drops in and make sure I tilt my head to the side and feel it reach the back of my ear. It feels funny, like a tinkle in the back of your ear. I don’t know what it does but it has changed my life. I recommend these to anyone to try, it can’t hurt. You can get them at the drug store, if they don’t have them they can order them for you. Now, the compound spray you have to get at a compound pharmacy, not like a CVS, or Rite Aid.
February 14th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Rell, one more thing. I used the spray and drops everyday for weeks, now I use only the drops maybe twice a month and get instant relief when used. It will then last for a long time. My canals were very bad and small according to my ENT.
February 14th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
wow dee im so glad that u have found some type of relief because it can control your life. Im an outgoing, funny, enjoys life type of person but this hearing my breathing and voice x2 changes all of that had it for about 6 years now so im very happy for u bro. I have 2 more questions for ya where is a compound pharmacy at? and whats the name of the stuff that your using from the compound pharmacy?
February 14th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Rell-It’s called Biestrogen 80/20 nasal spray. Look up compound pharmacy in the phone book. Every city has one.. However, Honestly I would start with the nose drops. “Ponaris nasal emollient”- I don’t use the spray anymore, I use the drops, it’s more like an oil. You put a few drops in and tilt your head to the ear that is bothering you. Mine would ALWAYS start in my right ear, then as the day went on go to the left ear and I would hear myself through BOTH ears!! I wanted to jump! ONce you tilt your head to the side you can sorta direct the drops to the back of your ear. ( I hope this is making sense) It tickles once it gets to the back of your ear. For some reason it closes the Estachian tube. It’s gives relief. USE THEM EVERY DAY! then when you don’t get the breathing everyday, start cutting back on the drops. As I said I only use them maybe 2 times per month if that.
February 14th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Dan, read above…you should always consult with your Doc first, but these are over the counter drops. Most pharacies do not carry them, but they can order them..BUT you have to put a few drops in your nose (the side where you can hear yourself breathe)then immediately tilt your headto the side to get it to the back of your ear..I will tell you, if it gets in your throat, it might give you a sore throat for the day…it has happened to me a coupe of times where I didnt “tilt” fast enough…:) IF you can hear yourself breathe in both ears but the drops in both nostrils. and TILT to the side…Again, you will know when it gets to the back of your ear cause it tickles behind the ear drum. I am not a doc, but, these drops have helped me!!!!!!Any questions please ask..
February 14th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Hello Everyone! I am so happy I found you ALL. I have had the “hearing my breath and my voice and the ear popping threw my ears for about 3 years now and the Doctors (ENT & MD & Allergist) say I am healthy as a horse and can hear fine and have no allergies. So, Dee, I am going to try your Compound spray AND drops! One question, do I need a Prescription for the Compound Spray? Thank you SO much EVERYONE for ALL of the input…SO VERY HELPFUL! Happy Valentines Day!
February 14th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
thx so much dee youve been a big help much appreciated. dee also do u have any allergies that you no of and have u had surgery concerning the breathing thru ears symptoms.
February 15th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
yup yup Dee it the spray user!
I cant im afraid!
February 17th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Hey Lette, Just me again, I decided not to go to the doctors, not being disrespectful but some doctors just dont know anything, but i think my ears better now, i think it was fluid behind the ear. my eardrum still rustles sometimes. but i guess im alright. thanks very much for your support!
February 19th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
hey all! i just found this site and i must say it’s very informative. as i have similar ear problems as alot of u, but mine just started about 2 days ago after getting hit dead on my ear by a baseball. 2 days have gone by hoping the problem would correct itself , but hasn’t. my ear seems constantly plugged up, and when i plug my nose and blow air comes out of my ear. my girlfriend could also hear the air come out of my ear. Lette, Dee, someone tell me what the problem may be! all comments will be much appreciated
February 19th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Hi Antonio-sorry to hear about your ear and the baseball. I am not sure this has anything to do with what some of us have here on this site. Honestly, if I were you I would certainly go to my doctor and find out what happened when you got hit in the ear with the baseball. You could try the drops I have talked about above and see if they help but, I am not a doctor and am concerned something happened when you got hit. I would go to the doc just to be on the safe side. Please let us know how you are feeling. We are all very supportive here!
February 19th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
thanks for the reply dee. yeah, i guess my situation is different for the fact it was caused by an injury. and i guess the safest thing b4 playing doctor(me being the doctor) is to go see a professional.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Hi Antonio! Please let us know what the doc says..I hope it isn’t serious..( I don’t think it’s too serious) but certainly enough to be concerned. I got hit in the throat one time by a softball. Couldn’t talk for 8 months..
February 20th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Hi im an 18 year old college student, and everytime i exercise my ears start to get very poppy, and i can hear myself talking and breathing in my ear, it causes nausea and dizzyness but it pretty much is only athletically induced. It is extremely frustrated, good luck everyine with their problems.
February 20th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Antonio, definately go see a doc, you could have preforated your ear drum or damaged one of the tiny bones in the middle ear, or it might not be that serious at al, but it would be best to get it checked
Willie, The exact same thing happens me and it drives me mad, welcome to the club dear
I woild reccommend going to see a specialist, because we still have no cause or cure for it, or even a name, but you may have something similar to us like estachian tube dysfunction or something and only a doctor or ear specialist will be able to help you there, and the more we can find out about it the better
so good luck and let us know
February 20th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Hi all thanks for your support I will be getting the ponaris nasal emollient tommorow hopefully that can help stop the breathing thru my ears problem
will let u guys no how it went please pray for me thank you all.
February 20th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Rell- Give it a little time-remember tilt your head to the side and get it to the back of your ear drum. You know it got in there because you can feel your ear tickle and go in..I hope it works for you as well as it did for me!
One little word of warning, since it’s like an oil after you get it behind your ear, make sure you BLOW YOUR NOSE and get the rest out. However, keep checking because since it is an oil ( this is gross) what is left in your nose sometimes comes out and you don’t know your nose is running because it a little thicker…
February 21st, 2008 at 12:30 am
Sup Dee! do u mean give it a few days or a few minutes to start working?
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
well the ponaris nasal drops didnt work for me to well actually It made it worse, but I called the people at the pharmacy and they said it’s a decongestant and decongestants make it worse for me
well I think imma go see an ent and see if I can get a compound nasal spray. Has any of you tried this Asian tea remedy? maybe I should try to get that.
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Rell-You did not give it enough time. It took about a week for it to work. Made it worse? How? I’m sorry it made it worse..Did you feel it get behind your ear? Just putting them in your nose will do nothing for you. Did you tilt your head and get it to fill your ear from the backside?
February 24th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
i think im doing it wrong cause i dont get that tickle feeling unless i put it thru my ears ( which i tried ) do u sit down when u do it?
February 24th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Rell-Oh my Gosh, please do not put them in your ears..The problem we have is with the Estachian tube, so it’s behind the ear drum, so drops in the ears will never work. The problem is they stay open instead of close like “normal people’s” That’s why we get the “breathing through the ear”, or can hear yourself talk. If you dont feel it get behind your ear then you are doing it wrong. Take the dropper, lean your head back and drop the drops in your nose, immediately tilt your head to try and get the drops to get in your ear through the “back way”. I stand and do it. It might take a few tries to get it in the canal via this way. Once you get it it will be easy from that time on because you are going to know what it feels like. I try and not let any get down my throat cause it gives me a sore throat. Once you feel it it will be like someone is tickling you in your ear. Look at it like a maze trying to get the liquid around the maze into the small ear canal hole. Then once you feel it get in there, lift your head and BLOW your nose to get the drops OUT. Remember it’s like an oil. So keep checking your nose because you will not know your nose is running cause you can’t feel the “oil”. Also, please do go see a doctor to make sure this is what you have. As I mentioned I have had this since I was a kid, and this stuff works, and I don’t understand why it does, it’s not like nasonex, or flonase. That stuff was a joke, and did make it worse for me. Rell, just so you know it took me a little bit to get the hang of HOW to get the drops in “RIGHT”.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Aight thx a lot Dee I actually am going to practice using water instead of the real stuff so I won’t waste it. Thx a lot for your help Sorry to keep asking you so many questions man it’s just this makes me want to just kill myslef sometimes it’s that crazy I sit and wonder why me but u thats life I Guess
February 25th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Dee-Okay, I got the “oil” and I see now that I need more practice getting it to my ear. It certainly does not taste all that great!
Question is I would really like to try the spray as well but I am unable to find it on line. I can get an RX but I need to tell Dr. (one in family) what it is that I need and I just don’t see it listed anywhere on line as a spray, I find it in pill form only. Can you help me?? Thanks!

Rell- No worries about the number of questions! Ask away. I know the feeling of wanting to JUMP! It’s aweful! No one knows how annoying and exhausting it is if they never had it before. And, to try and expalin this to someone that never had it before look at you like you have 5 heads. I am not sure I would practive with water, cause if you get it in the canal you now have water in your ear canal. Since you have it you know the weird taste it has if you swallow a little of it. Once you get it in the canal once you can do it every time! Its the first one thats the kicker. I promise I wouldnt reccomend this stuff if it didnt work for me. I am a 45 year old woman and have had this since I was in elementary school. I played ball and when I sweat it got even worse. I just wanted to cry. I would go to bed and wake up and still hear myself breathe through my ear. I would pull and push on my ear all day thinking it would make it stop!!!!! I know how you are feeling right now. I do not know why these drops worked for me. As I said I heard myself breathe 28 days out of 30, and now its maybe 2 days I have it but once I put the drops in it takes it away quick! I don’t know it because the drops are “oilish” it lubricates the Estachian tube causing it to close like normal peoples ears. I went to MANY MANY specialists and no one helped me. This Doc I see in NC knew EXACTLY what my issue was! I cried when these drops worked! All these years dealing with this. I called the office and cried to the nurse thanking him and the office staff for being so kind and understanding. Keep trying Rell! Try to get those drops to get in the ear canal. Then do it for a week everyday! But, if you have questions please ask away!!! I know what you are going through and so does most on this site! I know Lette does!!

Hi Mia- try the drops first. The drops have worked for me..The spray is a compound of Biestrogen 80/20 nasal spray.[Estrogen (Premarin) nasal drops (25 mg in 30 mL normal saline, 3 gtt tid) has been used to induce swelling of the eustachian tube opening. ]
use a combo of estriol/estradiol in a nasal spray. The standard is Estriol 80%/Estradiol 20% 2.5mg/ml Use 1 spray in each nostril two times a day.
Hope this helps..you can ONLY get these from a Doc and it must be made at a “Compound Pharmacy”, not a CVS, not a RITE AID. Depends on your insurance if they pay for it or not. If not they cost about $35.00 FOR A 30 DAY SUPPLY.
Please try the drops first for a week or so. They really did help me.
I am NOT A DOCTOR, I am just sharing with you what has helped me after all these years. This has been such a blessing and I hope and pray they help you as much as they have helped me..:)
(http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic208.htm)-this website is VERY HELPFUL in undersstanding what we have.

Mia- As I told Rell, once you get the drops in the ear via the nose, the next time you will know how to do it!
You might have to tilt your head WAYYYYYYYYY to the side and forward a bit. Once it goes in you will FEEL IT go in! Then blow your nose! Get it back out again. If it goes down your throat it always gives me a little sore throat for a day. I personally do not use the spray anymore, just the drops. The spray has to be kept in the refrig. LEt me know how you make out…:) Good Luck!
February 25th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
okay one more thing…just in case, if you are using the drops- if you are putting the drops in the right nostril, tilt your head to the RIGHT, and the left side for the left side. There is no way you can put the drops in the right nostril and get it in the left ear…:)
February 26th, 2008 at 10:03 am
hey dee do u fill it up to the line or do u take less
February 26th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Rell- I squeeze the dropper before pulling it out, it’s like about 1/2 way full. I tilt my head back and drop the drops in until I can feel it go up my nose, then tilt to the side I dropped the drops in.

Hey guys I have the same thing and it started a few years ago and hasn’t gone away since. I don’t know what it is but it definitely concerns me. When I start to jog or workout I can hear my breathing out of my right ear and also hear myself talking in my head. It is the worst feeling to have especially when you workout. I will find a cure and when I do I will let you all know or else I will kill myself, one way or the other its going to leave me.

Welcome Log..Sorry to hear you have the same problem. It’s aweful, and unbearable! Maybe some things that you may find out may help some others here. It seems some of us have a problem with the Patulous Eustachian Tube- meaning the eustachian tube doesn’t close like it should…that’s what causes the vibration and the breathing through your ear. If you read above I was fortunate to find something that has helped me tremendously! This is a good website to read on it..http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic208.htm

Lette-You have been through your share huh? I am so sorry to hear it..:(

Wow, the wiki article published above really addresses it! The temporary solution where one sits on a chair a puts his head between his legs really helps.
Another TEMPORARY solution I’ve found is pursing my lips together and blowing against them. This is without actually allowing any air out my nose. I’ve noticed that doing this also temporarily gets rid of that annoying sound.

On a further note, regaining all my weight lost to get this done…is not going to be easy.
1. I’m not a big fan of fast food.
2. I’m really skinny. Super-duper fast metabolism.
My life is hard…=-/
March 8th, 2008 at 11:47 am
AH, welcome, then if thats the case its certainly not a weight issue, and i wouldnt advise a weight loss of any kind!!!

Hey all.
I dont know if this is the right place to say this.. BUT……
I have this strange noise in my ear ONLY when i touch my skin on my right cheek.. I always thought it was normal because I’ve always had it. Only recently have I realized that its not really normal. It doesnt cause discomfort and it only just sounds like… an electrical current running through my ear.. its very strange.. and not very loud… more of a low rumbling hum. I’m just wondering if anyone here has ever heard of that happening??
March 17th, 2008 at 1:39 am

Lette,I am confused about this site. When I look at the “recent comments” they do not show up at the bottom of the post. If I click on the recent comments it brings me to another place with other comments…why is that?..:) Thanks!

I also have the same problem, it began when I was almost hit by a rocket propelled grenade in iraq, it exploded about 10 feet away. Now I have a constant ringing in my ears and everytime I exercise it feels like Im breathing thourgh my ears. I also cannot equalize pressure past 30ft while diving anymore. The military doctors say there is nothing wrong with me and treat me like some malingerer.. Any advice on what I can do on my own. Or is this something I will have to learn to live with?

Wen, I got it from my ENT. He is wonderful. He says this condition is very rare BUT SO MANY have it. This compound spray actually makes your ear swell a little forcing the eustachian tube to close. The reason why you can hear yourself talk is because the eustachian tube stays open giving you the “vibration”. He also gave me the drops I talked about above as well. I don’t use the compound spray anymore, the drops do the trick! As mentioned before, I have been dealing with this since I was a little girl. I am now 45 and FINALLY found a doctor that understood what I was talking about..

Hmmm… the thing is im not alloud put any water in my ears, but that spray shound like the trick! now that the tube is out from the operation last month, my breathing thru my ear is back worse than ever! I have a review at the end of april, Ill say it to him again and see what he sugests, I get the impression he is sick of me at this stage!! as for the comments
DEE:
the recent comments direct you straight to the most recent comment, that has been placed anywhere on this blog, click the ‘Somewhatsilent’ heading up above and it will redirect you to the main page with the mose recent posting from admins and writers, although at the moment this site seems to be run from this old post alone! this is an old post in this blog, I wrote it back in Feburary 3rd 2007, its a year old now and is as popular as ever, , and the ENTs tell us were talking dribble, YEAH RIGHT!!! Print this page out with all the comments and take it to your next appointment!

Lette- My ENT does not think I’m nuts. All my other doctors did. They all would give me flonase, or nasinex (that did nothing!) I had someone tell me to put cotton in my ear! I had some ENT’s say they didnt know what I was talking about and I will have to “live with” it. This doc knew exactly what I was saying to him. He said there is a surgery you can get. He said he would have to really research what doc is good at it. I haven’t seen my ENT since July. The stuff he gave me worked! His first exam, he put the camera up my nose to look at my ear, he said YUP your eustachian tube is wide open! This is what is SO frustrating! You go to Doctors that are supposed to KNOW these things, and they don’t and pretty much tell you it’s in your head, and make you feel like you don’t know what you are talking about! Then you walk into another Docs office and they know exactly what is wrong and fix you. In the meantime for 30 years I have been suffering with this!
March 27th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Dee- I also have been suffering with PET for about 8 years now. I notice you have seen an ENT in NC, I also live in NC. Who have you seen that you have had so much success with??
Thanks!!

Cwatts- I see a Dr Robert Taylor in Durham. He is wonderful, and knows exactly what this is..

I have been diagnosed with eustacian tube dysfunction… started about 3 months ago, after an ear infection and sore throat. I also have some tinnutus along with it. My ENT prescribed Ponaris Emollient. Since I am very sensitive to meds, I tried just putting a small amount of the oil inside my nostrils with tip of finger. My entire face seemed to feel a full, pressure sensation for about an hour afterwards. Has anyone else felt this sensation with Ponaris? The oil did seem to help my ears for much of the day after the initial odd sensation went away. ENT has also given me NeilMed Sinus Rinse, but I haven’t used it yet.

Hi Debbie, welcome to the support group!
I have had ETD for as long as I have been in and out with my ears and thats about… 19 years! I have never used PonarisI have only ever been given surgery to try and right my wrongs, but here are some links for you, dont be a stranger now
http://www.ponaris.net/
The only thing I have to say about these topical treatments are, that they are only topical!! ETD is mainly affecting the tube between the ear and the back of the nose, I dont know how putting a drop inside your nose could help that! please let me know if it does help tho
March 30th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Hi Debbie- I use the Ponaris for my ears. It helps me! I have had this problem since I was a kid and I am 45 now. MY ENT gave me them and it really does work. It smells weird. If I get it down my throat it gives me a sore throat for a day. I use the dropper and tilt my head to get it to the back of my ear that is bothering me. Once I feel it get to the back of my ear, I then put my head up straight and blow my nose to get the excess out. It works WONDERFULLY!
April 6th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Lette- I do not know why these drops work, but they do!
I was out at the store today and started to hear myself breath through my right ear. As soon as I got home I went for the Ponaris. A couple of drops in the right nostril, tilted until I felt it go in my ear through the back, and now, POOF, the breathing through my ear is gone. This should hold me now for a least 1-2-3 weeks…it instantly goes away..doesn’t make sense because the sprays NEVER WORKED for me, all they did was give me a headache. Maybe because it’s more of an oil? I was very skeptical when I was given these drops, but tried it because I was desperate! I couldn’t take it anymore..I wanted to JUMP!
