The Silence of Deafness is an Abstract, not an Absolute.
I am Roman Catholic but no longer go to church services. I stopped going years ago as I could not hear what the priest was saying and felt so lost and confused I felt it wasn’t worth the stress. I am still a deep believer I just don’t go to church.
I have tried approaching the priests and asked them if they could have a special mass for those who are hearing impaired or deaf but as yet have had no luck.
Do you go to Church and if so how do you cope?

I’m a renewed Christian attending a Conservative Baptist church. I’m
not conservative though, I’m cool.:) I take a seat in the frontmost
pew so I can lipread the pastor. The pastor is my brother-in-law, he
speaks well and that helps tremendously. The lyrics of the worship
songs are projected on a big screen and I can easily join the singing.
I just sing softly so others will not hear me singing out of tune.
With hearing aids and lip-reading, I can fairly understand 75 percent
of the pastor’s sermon. Our church worship and service is held in a
small building so there’s really no echo compared to the big and domed
Catholic churches with echo.

Unfortunately in the catholic church even standing in the front pew doesn’t help as the alter is a fair distance away just too far to lip read without straining my eyes. I used to manage when my hearing was a lot better and with the lip reading. As you say the churches are big and this definitely makes hearing the priest a lot more difficult.

Im a non practicing catholic, I fell out with the religion a long time ago, I still believe in ‘a’ god, and show my utmost respects to others, I kind have my own beliefs, you know, when the pope died I was compelled to return to the church, I didnt really know where I bellonged religion wise at the time, I only went back the once tho, I believe, what I believe, thoroughly in my heart, if you know what I mean, I respect others, I believe in a god, and I treat others how I would like to be treated etc. I dont follow a spicific religion, but I do believe im not a bad person because of that!!
sorry for the ramble, but I thought most churches these days have T-loop no???

Hi Lette Well since I have stopped going to church which is a number of years now I also believed that it doesn’t matter where one prays. As you say the most important thing is that we believe in God and treat others the way we want to be treated.

Do you live in London by any chance (sorry for terrible London-centricity)
I went to church once there Metropolitan Tabernacle (Protestant) and saw that there was a separate service for the deaf and BSL students practising on them)) (except their service was sometimes 2 weeks behind the main service)
Also our church in Cambridge does send sermon.doc emails in advance. Could you ask your pastor about that? He’d must be glad to have chance to help easier way…
