Im breathing thru my ears :(

by @ 8:05 am. Filed under Experiences

Ok I think i have said this here before but im having horrible trouble with my ears :( the only way to describe the feeling is like im breathing thru my ears, almost as if the eardrum popped but not fully, as I breath i can feel and hear the air move my eardrum in and out, im sure this is not ment to happen, Its terrible uncomfortable and can cause pain, also what worries me is its affecting my speach because of the movement in my eardeum and also my ballance, the only explanation i have gotten so far is it may be Barotrauma, see more here

http://healthgate.partners.org/browsing/LearningCenter.asp?fileName=100687.xml&title=

but thats my own research, I went to the doctor and theres nothing he can do for it, he said just pop ur ears, but i know the feeling in my own ears, if i do that ill preforate it, thats how sencitive this feeling is, its unbarable!!

please help, have onyof you had this, do you know what it is, Im flying also on saturday and Im so scared ill blow an eardrum :(

now I do have estachian tube dysfunction and there must be a connection here :(

Erk! Erm, from reading that I’m not entirely sure what you can do if the doctor isn’t being helpful. It might be that the adjustment to your new aids (moulds) is causing problems for you…

I guess you don’t have much chance of getting an appointment with audiology before Saturday? I agree that just ‘popping’ your ears is way too risky.

Things that I do when my ENT system bungs up, drink something hot (as hot as i can drink) and swallow a lot… Try inhaling steam, so get bowl of boiling water, hold head over it with towel over your head and try breathing slowly and see if that dislodges or repressurises anything…

Erm… The only other thing I can think of is to wear your aids as little as possible to see if that helps at all. Now I know that without my aids I hear bugger all, so assume it is the same for you so that is probably not practical a lot of the time…

Have you tried chewing gum, sucking sweets and all that ‘crap’ which supposedly helps with equalisation of pressure? Erm what else can I think of - keep your ears dry, don’t let them get wet inside (fill em with cotton wool when in shower) errr….

At this point I would phone audiology first thing on Monday and ask if someone could see you urgently to check your ears. They may have additional advice or can check the pressures in your ears. If nothing else someoen might be able to give you advice over the phone which is not “Just pop your ears!”. Is there an ENT doc who can check you out, or is there just your GP?

The only other thought is, how urgent is your flight. I hate to be the one who says it, but is there any way you can postpone/cancel the flight? If you got a doctors note for your ears travel insurance would recoup the costs…

Or playing devil’s advocate, how bad is it if you perf an eardrum (apart from the obvious Pain!)? Will it affect your current hearing? Is it inevitable given your ear anatomy and therefore not worth cancelling flights over given the risk? I don’t know and hope you’re not offended by me asking or suggesting as much… I know my eardrum does nothing effective because of the type and level of my hearing loss.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful, I’ve been extraordinarily lucky in that I’ve never perfed an eardrum and only twice had earache that was doctor-worthy… I think I only have one eardrum so that’s half the hassle as well! I don’t need mine for hearing as the middle-ear bones are so splatted as to be useless…

Let us know how you get on, maybe others will have better suggestions.

  3. hohprof (User Verified) :

Oh Lette, that sounds not only horrible but quite scary. As you say it’s almost certainly connected with your eustachian tube problems, but the most important thing is to take Natalya’s advice. This sounds like something URGENT - so do as she says, and phone or get someone to phone for you, or go in to see audiology department (not sure how near they are to you).

    Will be thinking of you.

  4. lette :

thanks guys, the thing is, this has happened like forever, it comes and goes when it pleases, I have been checked for preforated drums many time with this wierd complaint, and nothing has showed up!, but this current bout of it seems to linger and pee me off more than usual, and its only really the flight im worried about, ill have to buzz the audio in the morning i think! thanks all :)

  5. sara :

=\ I get that feeling a lot. Not exactly that, but something very similar. I feel like there’s a “bubble” and it’s painful and when I breathe, I have this cold rushing sensation and pressure in one or both ears (usually just my right ear). Things echo, and sound funny. I have a hard time talking when that happens (because of hte additional pressure of talking, and because I hear a slightly time-delayed and distorted echo of what I’m saying). Drives me INSANE.

With me- it seems to be related to humidity and exertion. Hearing aids definitely make it worse.

I’m sorry that the little bastard audiologists can’t help you figure it out!

  6. katie (User Verified) :

Aw… all I can say is that sucks. :( Sometimes when my ears are bothering me and I go into a doctor’s office and they shrug their shoulders, I wonder, in frustration, just how far “modern medicine” really has come. Grr!

    Hope you feel better!

  7. hohprof (User Verified) :

Katie - agreed 100%. It is incredibly frustrating to be poked around for a bit (usually painfully) only to be told that there doesn’t seem to be anything that can be done. In my case it is usually nasty infections which can only really be dealt with in the audiology department of the hospital (they have some spectacular orange goo that usually seems to work) but to see them usually requires making appointments some time in advance (!), waiting around for ages while there, *never* hearing the person that calls you into the room, at least not the first time, and generally getting frustrated. I wish my regular doctor could get hold of a supply of said orange goo but apparently it can’t be done anywhere else.

Lette - good luck with your talking to audiology tomorrow :)

  8. athina (User Verified) :

Lette hija, I hope and pray you’ll get better soon!

  9. karen :

I don’t have any ear issues that I know about, and I can tell you I think this happens to me sometimes, although I don’t think it ever causes pain. It’s kind of uncomfortable but the biggest problem it causes me is that it makes talking and singing tough because my voice sounds funny in my head. I also think it might have to do with exhaustion, dehydration, or some sort of inflamation… I can make it happen at will when my ears feel normal by sort of flexing my jaw muscles like I’m equalizing my ears, but holding it there and breathing. But sometimes it’s like it just gets stuck there.

My advice would be make sure you get plenty of sleep, are hydrated, and maybe take some ibuprofen or something. Maybe that will help.

  10. Smokey Jobe :

Well it appears I’m a little late in posting, but I have the exact same problem you described minus
the pain. I have a few temporary fixes you can try. My ear pops and it feels as if there is a
bubble stuck in it and I can hear/feel myself breathing through my ear, and I can’t tell how loud
I am talking. When this happens you could try gently pinching your nose and sucking in gently.
Kind of hard to explain but it is like reverse ear popping. Instead of pinching your nose and
blowing out, you suck in. This is a temporary fix and I do it when I need to answer the phone at
work so I can tell how loud I am talking. Another thing that helps is bending down. I know it
sounds weird, but when I am sitting in a chair and bend down to get something out of my bag, it
goes away for a little while. To get a little break from the bubble feeling and hearing yourself
breathe, you can breathe out of your mouth for a while. I find myself pinching my nose and sucking
in gently when I just can’t stand it anymore. That’s what I do most often.

This problem is incredibly annoying and happens to me in the months leading up to winter and through
out winter. My doctor couldn’t help me either and just said it was allergies. She told me to take
Allegra I think, but it didn’t help at all so I quit taking it. I have more allergy problems in
the warmer months though so it doesn’t make much sense. Well good luck I hope I helped.

  11. lette :

thank you smokey! thats exactly what I doo too! the sucking in my nose thingy, I just wish there was a long term fix for it!! it drives me insane!! :) thanks again :)

  12. rei :

    lette,

Did you ever find the solution to your problem? I have been experiencing similar symptoms and when I when to an ENT doctor yesterday, he checked me and couldn’t find anything so the only thing he did was prescribe me a nasal spray.

I also noticed that putting my head upside down makes the problem go away for a short period and I mentioned this to my doctor and he thinks it could be related to my low blood pressure. Do you also have low blood pressure?

Another thing I noticed so that when I squeeze the back of my neck, the problem will go away so maybe it is related the the pressure in my head? Weird…

Anyway, please let me know if you figure it out.

  13. lette :

Rei, no nothing has been found and it continues to plague me!! my current audiologist is a dick! so im calling the specialist again to figure something out! but i do have ‘below normal’ blood pressure, but nothing to be consirned about!! thats wierd tho!! how would that affect it?? as soon as i find out the cause, im going to do a big write up on it, as it has been with me all of my life and its driving me insane!!
thanks for the heads up tho :)

  14. Joann :

I have the same problem - bubble in ear, echo of sounds. Curently seeing a doctor, if I have any remedies I’ll post them.

P.S. Went to ENT, couldn’t find any problem, finally sent me for consult for TMJ. Yes, I have alot of inflammation in my jaw joints. Currently wearing a splint 24/7. But that Dr. doesn’t know if the ear problems are from TMJ. So, I am taking it one step at a time. Have another Dr. at John Hopkins Hospital working on my ear problem.

  15. Ollie :

I have the same problem. I went to some ENT ’specialist’ who gave me a nasal spray too, however,
the spray doesn’t work whatsoever. It’s annoying me loads because I find it annoying to do any sports
and my speech is affected in that I can hear myself talk.
I can’t believe so many people are suffering this and doctors don’t know anything about it.
If anyone gets this problem sorted out, please post how.
    Cheers

  16. Chad W Smith :

I’m glad to see that I am not alone, although I’m sorry that other people are suffering from this. I kind of thought I was going crazy.

If I hear anything or read anything, I’ll be sure to post. And I’m subscribing in case any one else gets an answer. I thought about going to the doctor - but if nobody’s doctor has been able to help - I guess there’s not much point.

  17. lette :

im delighted that ye joined to find out more about this sympton, im actually thinking of running a deaf blog, ONLY about this thing to try to find out more! My audio, my doctor, and my ENT specialist dont know what it is, thats not right and its really wierd, and I WANT TO FIND OUT MORE!!! whos with me???

  18. Ollie :

I’m with you! Let’s get this sorted out for all of us. But I’m not sure how to find any answers, seeing as the doctors don’t know…*Cries*
could it be that we all have really thin ear drums or something and thats why they blow in and out? Thats how I imagine it inside my ear anyway..

  19. lette :

well im calling my specialist on monday to get an appointment and im going to tackle this issue with him head on , once and for all, its especially bad this week, and im going NUTS!! so its going to be done b4 I hack my own ears off!!

    lette,
    (and others in distress),
Just take a step back and realize it’ll probably always be there, so you might as well not panic. Just try and think of how you can (safely) fix this yourself. I mean unless you have this 24 hours a day, and I really feel for you if you do, your body obviously has the ability to fix this problem on its own. Am I right?

I’ve gotten the exact same thing for years, more of a nuisance, and just one more weird problem i get sometimes, it’s like an ear charley horse. It really is completely insane! Like cellophane candy wrapper is puffing in and out on the inside of your head!! I actually had it happen right before I wrote this, searched for it, and somehow immediately found this place. Before you read, I should note that I have not continued the search as finding a better solution than this was my goal, but I felt bad to see people struggling like this, when I’ve formulated a fairly simple way to resolve this that I haven’t seen written.
I have learned to just not panic with things like that. I’m probably an idiot though. You know how you can cut off the air flow to your nose using your tongue, like rainsing it so it cuts off the flow of air, though you can still breathe through your mouth? Try it. Now while doing this, I’ll usually just keep swallowing, WHILE CONTINUING TO KEEP MY TONGUE BACK, (seems to be very important to not break the pressure generated) almost like i’m trying to swallow the very back of my tongue (don’t swallow your tongue) or like there’s something horrible stuck to the back of my tongue and I just wanna get it down without tasting it. Now that doesn’t always take, so I’ll try again, and usually it fixes it to a certain level but then i’ll swallow normally again and it’ll come back. If this happens, do it over again a few times, then, without swallowing normally, i’ll just tap the back of my tongue into the nose’s air-way, like i did to start, but this time, i keep tapping. You might hear noises in your ear(s) and this seems to be good. Now if none of these work, I just start making random combos of the regular swallowing, “blocked” swallowing and tapping, and usually I can feel what combo is succeeding, and it magically is fixed. I’ve always succeeded at making it go away within a minute using this method and it looks normal doing it too. Also, I wouldn’t recommend popping them, but i guess you could try AFTER you’ve tried ALL other ways. Sometimes I think it’s gone away, I’ll swallow, and it’ll be right back, but just trusting it’ll work eventually can be enough. YOU MAY NEED TO REPEAT THE WHOLE PROCESS A FEW TIMES, ESPECIALLY THE TAPPING (after the “blocked” swallowing), and it seems the harder you push against that part with the back of your tongue the better. One more note, as a final measure after it seems fixed, i will sometimes put my index finger in my ear (GENTLY), just so it covers the hole with the nail (so it isn’t sticking in, it’s more like just blocking the hole with the nail) and sort of do a kind of come hither motion with the finger so that it creates a small amaount of pressure in my ear to sort of pull air out. Try to keep suction on it, as that is the important part, as you slightly wiggle your finger. For me it helps to do it around 4 times a second, not too fast of course, but it seems the pressure maintains better that way. I don’t know, I also then will gently cover the ear hole with that little stub that hangs over it and gently rub the opening and this seems to bring my ear more comfortable state after all that distress.

Sometimes afterwards for some reason i’ll even get a few hiccups, and it sort of feels like the air-ways are resetting themselves.
Please be extremely cautious until you understand exactly what I mean. The swallowing and tapping stuff is most important, the rest sort of helps my ear recover and seems to prevent it from happening anymore.
You’ll know when it’s over because if it’s not (at least for me), you’ll still feel it sort of in there and you’ll know that it is going to come back the second you swallow again. It’s is really strange, but I’ve learned to control it so you should be fine.
Hope I’ve been helpful, and not just confusing (I’ve got mad ADD)
and I REALLY AM SORRY IF THIS DOES NOT HELP (what with the false hope and all:(
    KEEP SEARCHING!
    please comment back…

    Good Luck!
    g

  24. notadoctorGreg :

Probably should have read more thorough, but what I described can help if you get it sometimes, but I have no clue if it’ll do anything for something more serious. I’m really just trying to help.

Oh yeah, and i misspelled “raising” which is sort of important.

    My heart goes out…

  25. lette :

Hi notadoctorgreg :) I do this too, and unfortunatly some days is there 24 hours!! I breath through my mouth anyway because the main problem with my hearing is the fact that my estacian tubes and ear canalls are under developed, I also have a high lip so I have to breath through my mouth! I do that thing where I hold close my nose and inhale and kinda do a sucky thing with my thougue but as soon as I swallow again its back!! so unfair, on an increasing level also it is now begining to hurt me when I do this, it feels like I have torn something and im afraid of this, so im still waiting for that appointment and ill see what he sais :(

  26. Kristen :

Hi. Ok my ear’s have been doing this most of my life. I noticed it when my tubes fell out of my ears as a kid.It happens without blowing my nose.It
does it 24-7 I don’t have to yawn or fly in a plane to get them to pop. It does it all on it’s own. It drives me insane. No doctors have been able
to pinpoint the problem. I don’t get ear infections and I feel no pain, but it drives me insane, because I love to sing and I can’t finish the song once
my ears pop. I have found out as a kid by holding my nose closed and sucking in gently helps, but now sometimes I can’t get it to pop back even doing this.
I have visited a dentist to see if my jaw is offline…nope…I went to the ear Dr. to see if I am having ear infections….nope…I went to a nose Dr.
to see if i had allergies or sinus problems….nope. I have never flown before and my ears pop constantly, but when I finally flew with my husband his
ears popped painfully really bad the whole time…Mine never did. Flying in a plane is the only relief I got in 15 years of popping. When I flew in a
plane is the only time it didn’t do it…go figure right.I wish I had an answer to everyone’s popping ears, because I’d pay money to get it to quit doing
it.It is hard to speak when it does it. You begin to speak very loudly and never notice…but I can’t speak when it does it cuz it feels like there is
air in my ears and is very uncomfortable and people look at me like aren’t u going to answer my question…I wish people would understand.PLEASE HELP!Kristen

  27. nikki :

    hi everyone!

like most of you i have suffered from ear problems since i was a child, infections, glue ear (in adulthood as well) even now at the age of 38 im still having problems and suffer with vertigo as well as everything else…sighs!! i have been for a MRI scan recently, havent the results back yet but im hoping that my ENT consultant can sort out my ears once and for all!!! i too have the bubble thing and the breathing through my ears thing…lol i thought i was the only one!! the pinching the nose and sucking in i have done since child hood as the other way round never worked for me. im off to see my doctor on monday as i have the “bubble” flapping around and its doing my head in i find though if you dont swallow as much, usually asfter a few days the bubble goes, but i been feeling stressed by it because like you say once your ear pops, its as if some one has turned the volume down and you cant hear yourself speak, and no matter how much blowing or sucking you do…the bubble always comes back…:O( i wish i had some tips to give you all but mine are pretty much the same to whats already been written, but i wish everyone on here the best of luck and finding a cure for the “bubble”

  28. lette :

Ok iv rang my doctor again to send that letter to get an appointmnt with my Specialist, I have noticed over the past few weeks that im loosing my balance now, that has never happened before and its worrying me, It happenes most when I suck in to relieve my bubble ear thingy, so Im not letting this go ny further, and I promise as soon as I find out that it is, Im making a blog about it, people need to what this is!!, KEEP RESPONDING ALL

  29. brian :

    hey everyone,
i too have developed this ear problem. i am relieved that others have this “bubble” problem. no one understands when i try to explain it. i have never had problems with my ear, but late last year i developed and ear infection and flew on an airplane a few times and my ears have not been the same since. i am convinced that flying with fluid in my ears has disrupted the pressure in my inner ear. doctors have not helped a bit. it has been 6 mo since and i have had an MRI (my ENT sent me to a neurologist) he thought i had a brainstem leasion that was contributing to my solft palate flapping. he diagnosed me with palatal myoclonlus. i dont think my palate is the cause of this but rather a result of the pressure in my ear. i too hear my voice echo in my ear. i have not flown since this has happened and my problem has gotten relatively better. at first the clicking and flapping drove me nuts. i can only hope it will continue to get better with time. i am sorry for all of you that are experiencing similar problems. just want to let you know that i understand any you are not alone.

  30. Jen :

Hello! I flew 4 months ago and had a cold. I took sudafed prior to the flight & my ears clogged
during descent. We had to drive home (instead of flying home as planned the next day) because
I couldn’t hear. I went to my regular doc and she gave me Allegra and identified my problem as
allergies. I took them for 2 weeks, no change. Went to the top ENT docs in Philadelphia, believe
it or not, they prescribed Allegra D (even though I told them I don’t have allergies & the Allegra
didn’t work). Here I am 4 months later with no change. I can hold my nose shut & make my ears pop, but
it never clears out the problem. I can pop them all day & no improvement. I have to fly in a month
and am totally scared. The ENTs said I could fly & would experience the same thing on descent. I’m
worried about my eardrums and making the problem even worse. No one will help me. If one more doc tells me
that I have allergies I will scream. Would love to hear from someone who either had this problem
resolve on its own or found a remedy. So not looking forward to my flight & I can’t cancel.

  31. lette :

Hi Jen, :) I get that all the time, it hurts and annoys the frack outta u, but unfortunately it has to be done, no iv never had it for 4 month after flying!! it just comes at more intencly when i fly, the only thing i would hope for is that the next time you fly, it may right itself :) best of luck and please write back if you have any more concernes we may be able to help you with :)

  32. frosie88 :

    hey everyone,
i am only 19 and i have the same problem that you all have. im really glad i found people that have the same problem, i thought i was crazy!! it started to happen when i played soccer several years ago. It happens every so often now, usually when i do something strenuous. it doesnt hurt but its really annoying. i wish doctors would understand and help find a cure for this. im just scared that it will cause problems in the future. i do have a history of deafness in my family.

  33. lette :

Frosie88, ur 19 if you dont have a deafness problem now, I think ur doing great :) and yeah exercise definatly agrivates it! im seeing my specialist every other week now and wre trying hard to get to the route of the problem

  35. Paula Smythe :

I am searching the web because my ENT just odered a C-Scan of my head. He saw a growth that where by adenoids used to be and thinks that growth is pushing on my ears causing this echo in my head. I feel much better now that I have read your comments and know that this does not just happen to me. My General Practitioner thought it was dehydration, then low blood pressure. I had those test done. My heart doctor checked by artery to the head to make sure I was getting blood flow to my head. That was ok. The ENT has now treated me for 4 months with nasal sprays, steriods, and decongestants all to no avail. This why he ordered the C-Scan. Have any of you had this done?

  36. lette :

I have had an MRI and a C Scan done, when you are getting ENT treatment where there are difficulties in diagnosig a problem they will do a scan once every 5 years, I had mine done about 4 years ago, so ill be due another soon, they are nothing to worry about, your ENT only did it to make sure he could rule out any other causes. So they didnt do it because they were worried about anything serious, they only did it to get a better view to make sure there wasnt anything hidden that they didnt think of!

My adenoids were taken out with my toncils when I was 7, and when they did the scan of my head 4 years ago they say that the adenoids had partially grown back, and reffered to that as a growth, so its nothing to worry about at all! they told me that the roots had started to grow back, and adenoids can cause ENT problems with blocking the estachian tubes and causing echos and fluid build up, nothing hugely serious! but getting them removed in adult hood is not advisable because the blood vessles and veins and capileries grow bigger and deeper as an adult, so if tried to be removed it can cause excissive bleeding which may leed to other complications!, this is what they told me so they decided to leave them alone for the moment. The can be removed successfully in a lot of cases, but im a chickin so I didnt go for it!!, you may never even be told or asked about it because perhaps in your case its not nessicary, I just thought id share my story to make you aware of another possibility.

But I wouldnt get worried over the scan, its standard procedure once every 5 years :) :)
    Good luck :)

  37. Paula Smythe :

Being referred to another ENT for another opinion. Cannot figure out why I sound stopped up when I am not. He does not want to do anything yet with the “growth”, he may want to biopsy it later. Says he does not think that is not the cause of my echo problems. Will keep you posted.

  38. lette :

Paula, please do, id be interested to hear the development :)

  39. Nicole :

I’m relieved after reading this blog. I seriously thought I was the only one suffering from this problem. I’ve told my mom about it, my boyfriend, my friends… all of them have NO clue what I’m talking about. I’m going to an ENT tomorrow and I feel better prepared. I’m not going on any meds or taking any nasal sprays.
Why is there not a solution to this problem? I don’t get it. Doctors need to get on that!

  40. Tara :

Thank you everyone! I was so relieved when I came upon this blog. I have tried to explain all the symptoms to my family and husband. They don’t understand and think I am crazy, LOL. Especially when I say “I can feel the air in my ears when I breath”. It is great to finally find people who have been dealing with the same problem. I have been dealing with this for so long, I can’t remember when it started. I am 30 now.

I have tried “breathing in”, and turning my head upside down to stop it. I just tried putting pressure on the back. That is another great trick and looks less noticeable than holding my nose or hanging upside down in public. Thanks Lette!

It seems as though when it start it will go on for weeks. It has lasted up to about 2 months. It happens on and off during these times but it is everyday. Right now, I have been going nuts for 2.5 weeks. I need to find a solution and I can’t understand how Doctors don’t have any idea what we are talking about… now THAT is CRAZY to me! I have been to the ear, nose, and throat doctor… had the MRI, but I stopped going when I knew he didn’t understand and after he prescribed many other meds that didn’t work, he wanted me to get on steroids.

I could just deal with it like notadoctorgreg said (and I completely understand what he is saying), which I do, but if I keep search at least there is hope I will come across someone who has found a solution. It is just such an uncomfortable pain and annoying problem. It really interferes with my life.

    Sorry this was so long.
    T:)

The new EnT i went to, knew exactly what the problem was.!!!!

He called it Patulous Eustachian Tube. He looked in my ear and could see my ear drum moving when I breathed. He is going to put a temporary hole in my ear drums to simulate tubes in my ears. He said if this helps he will put tubes in my ears, although it will not clear the problem it may help some. The only real solution is a surgury that he does not do so he recommended someone in Houston that does it. Somehow they do something to fix it. I am going to see if the hole in my ear drums helps. I really do not want to do the other surgury.

He said he has had the problems before as well when he would exercise. You can look up this problem on the google search. I read quite a bit about it.

I am tired of people asking me if I have a cold and this crazy breathing!

(The growth that the other ENT saw where my adnoids used to be, this doctor said not to worry about it, it is only tissue.)

  42. Dee :

Paula- I always say before surgery please read my other posts at what my ENT gave me- again I have had this siince I was a little girl and the drops and compund spray worked for me! Not a lot of ENT kknows about any of these things…The spray is a hormone that swells the ETube and makes the hearing yourself talk go away. The Oil drops are all I need now..I had it SEVERE, I would get it 28 days out of 30 days…all day BOTH ears! These have been a God Sent! These are different than the regular nasenex or flonase drops or sprays..

  43. Andrew :

Hello everyone and thankyou for publishing this topic! I am 22 years old and havnt got a history in the family at all of deafness or hearing problems. I myself am not deaf in any way either and yet everyday for the past 9 or so months so far. Ive been having the same problems as people are stating in this topic when i am singing. I can be singing for half an hour or even an hour and all of a sudden my right ear will pop and i go completly tone dead! It feels like i am talking to people underwater through my right ear! My singing teacher has said to me that it could be due to a blockage in the sinus area.

I have tried using nasal drops and doing the breathing backwards whilst holding my nose and it only helps for a couple of minutes and when i swallow the problem comes back. Its really beggining to annoy me now.

I know that people have already given advice previous to my message but anyones assistance would be appreciated on trying to solve this problem :)

I have been having this problem, but only recently. I’m trying to remember if it started before or after I was on a plane in November. I hadn’t flown for years, but I don’t remember having the problem in the past. Thankfully, I only have the problem in my left ear. I can’t imagine how awful it would be to have it in both ears. Mine comes and goes, but mostly goes. I have only tried the solution to turn upside down when I can’t stand it anymore. The cure doesn’t last long, but it doesn’t usually continue for many days. I don’t usually feel pain, but sometimes it does hurt a little when I keep trying to clear it. I haven’t talked to a doctor, but I will ask my doctors about it and let you know if I get any answers. I feel way sorry for all of you who have this problem, and especially in both ears!

  45. Christopher :

Its very nice to see all these posts, before this I
havent heard of anyone with this problem. Ive been
suffering from this for about 2 decades now, usually
lasting only a few days 6 or so times a year. This
year though it got me already 8 times and the last
time has been ongoin for bout a month now. I have
always done the pinch nose and suck in trick with
only very temperary releife, usualy as soon as i
swallow it goes bad again. Im goin Crazy! I just
tried the upside down thing and it works great! for
about 30 secs ;0( Does anyone know if this problem
can be reason to get on disability? I find it very
difficult to even be alive let alone trying to deal
with people or day to day activities. Most days i
feel like i just have to sit alone somewhere. I have
found that marijuana seems to make it go away for
a few hours, longer than any other trick, but I dont know if it
was just gonna go away for a while anyway. Has anyone
    else noticed this?
Jeez I really hope someone figures this out soon,
Its destroying my life and I will do just anything for help!
I have no health insurance so advise on who to see
    first would be great!
    PLEASE! SOMEBODY! ANYBODY!
Also, I empathise with everyone with this problem, and wish you all
the BEST. That said, I feel better knowing that I am not alone in this.

talon6875@gmail.com I’d like to talk to anyone about this, please contact me

  47. Christopher :

Ive tried that nose pinch and then quickly hanging my head upside down, and
works great for about a half hour, and longer the second time i do it.
however if i swallow to quickly after righting my head the good effects of it
goes right away. I found that spitting instead of swallowing helps prolong
the normal feeling. In the army I knew alot of people that chewed tobacco
and used an old mt. dew bottle to spit in so others wont get grossed out
by what was in it cuz of the green bottle. Its not a cure but it may help
and help with hiden the gross.

  48. Paula Smythe :

Dee, I did not see your other posting regarding the name of the spray or drops, can you please post again?

  51. Dee :

Paula- I am still very confused how this site works. It seems like there are 2 parts to it. but here it is from the “other part” to this site…“Ponaris nasal emollient”- I don’t use the spray anymore, I use the drops, it’s more like an oil. You put a few drops in and tilt your head to the ear that is bothering you. Mine would ALWAYS start in my right ear, then as the day went on go to the left ear and I would hear myself through BOTH ears!! I wanted to jump! ONce you tilt your head to the side you can sorta direct the drops to the back of your ear. ( I hope this is making sense) It tickles once it gets to the back of your ear. For some reason it closes the Estachian tube. It’s gives relief. USE THEM EVERY DAY! then when you don’t get the breathing everyday, start cutting back on the drops. As I said I only use them maybe 2 times per month if that.

    and:
It’s aweful, and unbearable! Maybe some things that you may find out may help some others here. It seems some of us have a problem with the Patulous Eustachian Tube- meaning the eustachian tube doesn’t close like it should…that’s what causes the vibration and the breathing through your ear. If you read above I was fortunate to find something that has helped me tremendously! This is a good website to read on it..http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic208.htm

I went to the Doctor eleven months ago with a headache, I was tol I had high blood pressure and put on tabnlets, was also given tablets to make me sleep, I have now for the last seven months had chronic earaches both of them , when I go to the Dr he looks in with the light and says there is nothing wrong.

I think he must think I am a hypo, I have had accupuncture and a scan.
