The Silence of Deafness is an Abstract, not an Absolute.
Hello everyone. I want to say once more that I am profusely happy I found this site. It felt like finding my kith and kin.
I am from the Philippines where English is just a second language so you will have to check my peculiar English from time to time. I began losing my hearing when I was five years old. I can still remember the first time I heard ringing in my ears. It was a summer afternoon and I was gathering tamarind fruits that fell to the ground. I told my mother about the ringing sound but she didn’t understand what I was talking about. Of course we know it is tinnitus a sign of hearing loss. I have ambivalent feelings about my disability. Most of the time I’m depressed. I just console myself with the fact that I belong to a group which modern science and medicine call special person.
I am young once and was a former teacher like prof.

Good you chose to be a teacher. It’s a noble profession.
I read the Greek magnate’s bio way way back.
Oh, Athina is just a name I got for myself to use in the net.
I dont know about Battlestar. I took the name Athina from
Onassis’ first wife.
I read a lot. It compensates for my disability. I’m actually
rereading Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer prize winning memoir -
Angela’s Ashes. You’re Irish and I think you know McCourt from
Limerick.

Have a nice day!

Hi athina!
That is a very pretty name.
I’m Alli. I’m the resident blind one… I have hypo and hyper myopia with ambliopia (nearsighted & far-sighted with a lazy eye) I’m a contradiction… And am currently a student in the process of being a lawyer. I’ll make it eventually, just a few more years…. now how broke I’ll be when I’m finally out is a different story… heh anyway: I hope you stick around! I look forward to hearing what you have say.

Hi Alli. Glad to meet you. It seems everyone loves my name.:)
I didn’t know a lazy eye also has a medical name. I’m glad you’ll
be a lawyer someday. That’s heavy. I really wish to stick
around. I promise to be most behaved so that Sara will not banish
me as she would a troll.

Hi Olin, my French friend. Why did you stray here?
Hi Sara and all. Olin is my friend. I bragged to him about
this site so he came a-visiting. He’s a harmless guy. He’s
not a troll, neither is he a jerk.:)

Hiya Athina and Olin, welcome to somewhat silent.
Alli: Nice contradiction you have going there with eyes. It is very annoying being contradictory, although I think for some of us it is in our nature - it is for me anyway
.

haha. I didn’t even go into the whole part of it either: I’m extremely light sensitive and nightblind… which sucks to no end. but it could be worse… i guess.

You can get that with hearing, where you are deaf, but any amplification of value also causes pain. Apparently some types of deafness are really difficult to hearing aid for, I met one lady who had a 90dB hearing loss, but any tones over 105dB were excruciatingly painful for her.
I’m lucky I can pretty much tolerate 120-130dB without my aid with no pain at all. In fact as a student I used to go to crappy clubnight I could blag my way free into (union hack privs) and stand next to the 4foot high speakers for 20-30 mins with my aid turned off to see what I can hear. If something I know plays it is interesting to see what bits I can and can’t hear. I do however, avoid doing this for more than 20 mins at a time because even I could damage what hearing I still have.
I have freaky eyes too, but mostly orthoptically. I have something called Duane’s syndrome which means I can’t move either eye outwards of centre. This makes compensating for and treating my shitting balance very slow and difficult. I’ve just found someone in the US who is doing a research project into Duane’s and my other syndrome(s) as they may be linked - she’s going to send me stuff so my family (whoever is willing) and I can participate.
Gotta love complex syndromes which interact to give weird freaky shit which scares medics. I’m looking forward to my vestibular rehab appt on Friday - the last guy was the first doc in ages not to “wtf” at my eyes
