We have fireworks in England

by @ 10:51 pm. Filed under Misc

I dislike fireworks for two main reasons. Ths first is that they terrify my dog, who has been a gibbering wreck all evening (November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night in England). The second is that they terrify me. I have no high frequency hearing, but I do have some low frequencies, so the deep bomb-like bangs come through only too clearly. That’s a weird sensation when you’re not used to hearing stuff – suddenly to have scary explosions going off in my head. I would just have taken my hearing aids off, but had friends round for dinner, so that wasn’t an option. One of these friends has virtually no low frequency hearing but has some good high frequencies, and she was hearing fireworks a totally different way. Apparently there are fizzy sparkly sounds that are just as disconcerting as the low booming ones. And almost every fire/burglar/car alarm in the district seemed to be set off by them this evening as well.

It’s disconcerting, as a deaf person, to have such a loud evening…!

my appololgies to a not so happy evening, last night as I came home from work and then my boyfriends house, someone nearby my house was setting off the remainders of fome halloween fireworks also. Im only accross the pond from you hohprof! but in Ireland we dont have fawkes night thats a british holiday. Fireworks are illigal here but yet they find their way into the country and some people will use any excuse to use them.
they terrify amimals and are so bloddy dangerous!!

I know that Guy Fawkes night is a very English thing - and as someone with Catholic roots myself, it’s not only the noise of fireworks that I don’t much like about this particular “celebration”, but I didn’t know that fireworks were illegal in Ireland! Good idea, I say… The street outside our house is covered in dead fireworks debris this morning *and* people are even setting them off this morning again – in broad daylight. Last year some kid threw a banger at me and it frightened the wits out of me (specially as I don’t walk very well), but at least that hasn’t happened this year. Oh dear, this sounds like non-stop moaning. I must get my head round some positive thinking :)

well now that uv found my blog, u wont find much more positive than that :p
    hows ur doggie now??

  4. hohprof (User Verified) :

Heh - he’s a lot less panic-stricken today (though that may not last if the bangs start up again when it gets dark).

Ouch, doesn’t sound too fun. Hope your pup’s doing good now!

He’s ok, but still *very* nervous, and that’s not helped by the fact that there are some left-over fireworks being set off randomly even nowl.

Poor doggie. M and B (my mutts) are totally sound-oblivious. They’ll get all territorial if someone ventures into our hallway or into the bushes around our apartment, but they’re okay with cars backfiring, cars honking, fireworks, fire engines, guns, jackhammers, and all varieties of loud noise. I guess they’re city-dogs. One thing neither of them likes to hear, though, is someone screaming in fear/pain (woman, child, dog, man) and they’ll roust us up to go check and see what’s wrong. And then they’ll try to intervene. I love my pups. :)

Yes it was very interesting comparing the firework noises. You and I have almost opposite experiences of hearing. You can’t hear a lot of the sounds which I hear really well and I’m sure you hear a load of sounds that I don’t believe in.

    I know I subconsciously don’t believe that
